As many of our followers may know, on 1st January 2024 there was a devastating earthquake on the Noto peninsular, Ishikawa prefecture, Japan. Lives were lost, homes, schools and places or work were destroyed by the quake itself and the fires that followed.
The Hakone Ekiden 100 started the following day, and as a result the two events felt linked in peoples’ hearts and minds. The UK Ekiden management felt the same, and we announced on our website that we would like to make a donation after the race towards the Noto peninsula recovery.
Our friend, Mayumi Tachikawa, originally from Ishikawa but who also lived in the UK, kindly helped us realise our wish of supporting the region. In August 2024 she took our donation by hand to two artisan groups in Noto, whose workshops were completely destroyed. We hope that our donations will contribute in a small way to the reconstruction, and that in the future should they have capacity, we will be able to continue our bond with the region by purchasing our UK Ekiden winners prizes from the Noto peninsular craftsman workshops.
